Native and Aboriginal Women Call on Women's Movement Support, NAC, 1998

April 21, 2000

As learned from the women on the Aboriginal Women's Panel at the 1998 National Action Committee on the Status of Women  A.G.M.

a)  Call on the federal government to repeal Part IV Sec. 67 of the Canadian Human Rights Act in order that the Canadian Human Rights Act will apply to the Indian Act. http://www.parl.gc.ca

b)  Call on the federal government to see that the Canadian Human Rights Act applies to Native and Aboriginal women in cases of divorce so that Native and Aboriginal women living on reserve have access to matrimonial property, rather than as it is presently where only the Indian Act applies and decisions about  access to matrimonial property is left up to band councils.

c)  Section 6 (2) of the Indian Act limits the ability of Native and Aboriginal women to pass their heritage to their children.  This must be corrected.

Research by Native and Aboriginal women is underway to discover the extent of the damage Section 6 (2) has done.  It is important to support this research with money.

d)  Call on Status of Women Canada Minister Fry to fund Native and Aboriginal women's groups before mixed groups of Native and Aboriginal people such as the Assembly of First Nations.
