Tuesday, December 5, 2017

On the eve of December 6; the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter is releasing its latest statistics from frontline crisis work in the past year:

-582 women were raped by their husbands, boyfriends or lovers and another 86 women were raped by their ex male partner after they broke up with him.
-60 women were sexually assaulted (most often raped) by their male supervisor or co-worker
-297 women were sexually assaulted by someone they knew superficially, often through a social circumstance like a party, mutual friends or someone they had a first or second date with.
-80 women were raped by their own fathers when they were young and another 120 women were sexually assaulted or raped by other family members or family friends.
-83 women were assaulted by men who were strangers to them.

Hilla Kerner, spokeswoman of Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter: “Many women are still victims to rape and sexual assault, often by men who are the closest to them. The #MeToo campaign reinforced what we, on the front line already know” “Men know they will get away with raping women” Kerner continues “the criminal justice system has been failing women continuously by its refusal to hold violent men accountable”.

Another systemic failure that prevents women from being safe from abusive men is women’s poor economic situation and the lack of temporary shelters, let alone long-term affordable housing. “In the past year we had to turn away 618 women who were looking for a safe space for themselves and their children”.

“The provincial government must step up its game when it comes to male violence against women” Kerner concludes: “We need a dramatic response to alleviate women’s poverty and we need a serious change in how police, crown and judges treat cases of male violence against women”.
