Routinely, men that are deemed dangerous by Crown prosecutors and judges, as evidenced by the granting of protection orders and/or no-contact as a bail condition, are released into the community and as a result, fatally harm women. Below are a number of tragic cases where femicide has been allowed to happen.
- CBC: In August 2024, Marlon Glover killed three people at a home in the municipality of McCreary before he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man’s ex-partner managed to escape and hide in a wooded area, after which Glover went to a nearby residence, where he killed her parents and brother. Late last year, she was granted a protection order against him, he was under conditions not to have contact with her. ↩︎
- CTV: Vanessa Terry was found dead on April 6, 2024, in her home onn the Sq’éwqel First Nation in B.C.’s Fraser Valley. Frederick Paul Charlie, 36, has been charged with second-degree murder. He has been charged with intimate partner violence offences on four previous occasions. His most recent conviction was for a breach of a release order. He was sentenced to one day in jail and 18 months probation for that offence in March of 2023. ↩︎
- Global News: In October 2023, Kulwant Kaur was killed in her New Westminster home by her husband who was convicted in the past for his uttering threats against her and for breaching the no-contact condition of his bail release. Balvir Singh is charged with second-degree murder in relation to her death. ↩︎
- Global News: In August 2023, Brianna Jankauskas from Kelowna was killed by a man who was charged and released the year before for assaulting another woman with a weapon. Brandon Davina is charged with second-degree murder in relation to her death. ↩︎
- CBC: Stephanie Forster was shot on December 8, 2022 in Coquitlam, BC. Investigators believe her ex-husband, Gianluigi Derossi, is responsible for the murder, but he died of self-inflicted injuries two days later in Surrey. Court records confirm that Forster had a restraining order against Derossi at the time of her death. ↩︎
- The Chilliwack Progress: In July of 2022, Amber Culley and Mimi Kates, both mothers to young children, were killed in Chilliwack, BC by Eric Shestalo who was arrested and charged a couple of months prior with two counts of assault and two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. He was released with conditions that he subsequently breached and followed through on his deadly threats. ↩︎
- Vancouver is Awesome: Jian Wei Wang, 50, is charged in relation to the death of Jian Ying “Angela” Du on May 1, 2022 in Vancouver, BC. He was previously charged with assault against her in May of 2021 and was released on bail conditions not to have contact with her. ↩︎
- CTV: April Monk died in Vancouver on February 8, 2022 following an attack by Donald James Beynon, her boyfriend. Five months before he killed her, he had been charged with assaulting her and was released under the condition he was not to have contact with her. ↩︎
- CTV: In August 2018, Dahia Khellaf filed a police complaint alleging domestic violence by her husband Nabil Yssaad, leading to charges against him of assault and assault with a weapon. Prosecution proceeded with a peace bond requiring Yssaad to stay away from his wife. Five days after that document was signed and the charges were dropped, police say Khellaf and her two sons were strangled to death in the family home. He ended his own life the next day. ↩︎
